My Favorite Nikes & Nike History

Nike is more than just a brand, it is a way of life. Nike has changed the way of athletic wear and turned it into so much more. The brighter the better, and the cuter the workout outifit the more motivation most people will have to work out.

There are SO MANY Nike shoes that I would love to have. Not only to have for the gym, but everyday wear as well. I have six pairs of Nike shoes currently, but lets be honest, a girl can never have too many shoes. Literally shoes are so special, and I know they always make me feel good. Our body sizes may vary up and down, but our feet generally stay the same, and the shoe will always fit. It makes the entire outfit and especially with Nike's I love to mix and match them with other workout gear.

When I put this set together of all my favorite Nike Shoes on Polyvore it made me think of the brand and when it all started. I researched a lot about the company and found some interesting facts.

On January 25, 1964 Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports with just $1,200 in the bank. This took me by surprise because I thought Nike had been around for much long, like MUCH, MUCH, longer. Little did they know that Blue Ribbon Sports would turn into Nike, the biggest athletic company in the world.

It's roots started on the campus of University of Oregon where Phil Knight was a teacher there. Jeff Johnson was the first employee and he also helped come up with the Nike name which was founded in 1971. There was never a Nike logo until it was created in 1983. A student named Carolyn Davidson at Portland State University designed the swoosh for a mere $35. Although that was such a cheap price, even back then, Phil Knight also gave her a swoosh ring with a diamond and an unknown amount of stock.

The "Just Do It" campaign was officially launched in 1988 and is now enshrined at the Smithsonian National Museum. The slogan was inspired by serial killer Gary Gilmore, who said "lets do it" just before he was executed by a firing squad in 1977. There was also a lot of information about Nike and Michael Jordan and the famous basketball shoes, but long story short, #NikeIsLife and #NikeIsForever. I may or may not have a slight obsession!
