Year in Nails - 2015

This was a requested post from a reader (Lesley Smith) in my last Sunday's Caffeine with Christine post. She suggested that I put together all my nail colors I had last year to take a look back and see since I may not have shared them all on my blog. I usually post my nail pictures on my Instagram account, so be sure to follow me there if you don't want to miss out. It was fun to put this post together and see all the fun colors I had over the year.

I have been going to a salon called E Nails in Fresno, California for about two years now. My nail technician (Tuyet) is fantastic and she works well with me to experiment with what I want. I have her put gel polish on using the LED light which lasts about 3-4 weeks so I can usually go about every month unless I want a color change sooner. Last year the only month I painted them myself was September because I wanted to try the matte top coat since they don't have any matte colors there.

I'd love to hear what some of your nail color combinations are, and where you like to get your nails done.
(January 2015)
I knew I wanted warm, dark colors for colder weather, so I chose to mix grey and gold together to create a 50 Shades Of Grey inspired look. You'll notice that I love to add glitter to the top of the nail and gradually bring it down to create an ombre effect. This is one of my top favorites!
(February 2015)
As soon as I saw this lovely lavender color, I instantly fell in love with it. It was so beautiful by itself that I only added a slight silver glitter all over my ring finger.
(March 2015)
I had never painted my nails green before this, and now I remember why. After about a day I was already over it and wanted to change the color, but I left it for a couple of weeks through St. Patrick's Day. I though I'd combine a light green and dark green, but it just turned out unpleasant. I think it would have been better if I chose a more forest green color. Oh well, it was interesting that's forsure!
(April 2015)
This is probably one of my favorite bright pinks that I've ever worn. I think I had it on my nails a few different times throughout the year. It is another color similar to the lavender that just looks really pretty by itself, so all I did was add a silver glitter all over my ring finger. I got so many compliments on these.

(May 2015)

I liked the idea of combining peach with an aqua color so I came up with this combination. I out peach on all of them except the ring finger with a top light gold glitter all over the nail. For the ring finger I did a light aqua with long silver vertical glitter to add texture. It turned out to be what I wanted and went great with everything.

(May 2015)
I originally saw this from a Pinterest post and had to try it because I loved it so much. I would say that this was my most "liked" nail picture that I posted on Instagram, but maybe because in the full image I had Reddick in the background!

(June 2015)
Every time I'm about to get my nails done I ask my boyfriend what color I should paint them. Every time his response is black. I will rarely ever just paint them a plain color so I took half his suggestion and then added a touch of pink. I also found a pink & black glitter that was really pretty so I added that to the top of every nail. I loved these!

(June 2015) -- my hand is on the right, and to my left is my friend Allison's nails.
I used the same pink as before and the same peach color, and then added a full silver glitter to the ring finger. I loved how these colors went together so well. Bright colors for the summer make me soo happy!

(July 2015)
This was similar to the pink, white, and gold nails I had in May... But instead, I tried a silver on the ring, white on my index, and then a red/orange color on the rest of my nails. It was somewhat Fourth-0f-July appropriate.

(July 2015)
I was fairly tan in July even though you can't tell in this picture. I wanted to try a light nude color that would make me look darker, and try a more simple and natural approach. Turns out it went perfect with my friend Chrissy's MK bag. To keep it clean, I added a gold glitter on the top to every nail. Pretty!

(August 2015)
This was another "first" when it came to color. Yellow can either be a hot or a miss. I actually liked the way this turned out. I was able to use my favorite bright pink color on the ring finger and then add a multi-colored speckled polish all over my ring finger. This was a perfect set to end Summer on a bright and happy note.

(September 2015)
Sometimes my nail color reflects my attitude and personality. September is always a hard month for me due to the anniversary of my grandmother's death. I also wanted to experiment with "MATTE" polishes so I painted my nails all-black and then added the Sally Hansen matte top coat.

(October 2015)
I absolutely despise the color orange on my fingers, so there was no way I was getting Halloween nails. I chose a navy color and then added thick vertical silver glitter to the top. Funny story: Justin and I flew to Washington to visit some friends and family. Turns out my nails matched our plane (Alaska Airlines) and the flight attendants loved them!

 (November 2015)
I found the perfect pale pink color and added a baby pink and silver glitter to the ring finger. Very basic, yet classic.
If you can't tell, pink is a staple color of mine.

(December 2015)
My favorite Christmas nails of all time. I loved how the snowflakes turned out. Maybe next time I'll add a green glitter to the red. I looked on Pinterest and then kind of just customized them from something similar.

(December 2015/January 2016)
These were my New Years Nails. Not surprising that I went with black and gold. My favorite part about this set was the bold chunky black glitter that I layered on top of the gold. These were fun to end the year!

Hello Monday

It's Monday, don't forget to be awesome, and smile (a lot).

My lack of posts the past three days is uncanny, and I apologize for going M.I.A.
Although, if you follow me on Snapchat (@christinemwest) you'd know I wasn't totally dead to the world.

The weekend kind of disappeared from me, I was either too busy to even look at my computer, or not busy at all where I wanted to do nothing but curl up with a book.
Sometimes a digital detox is a good thing.

This past weekend I discovered Undercover Boss on Netflix (am I the only person who cries at the end of EVERY episode?). I also took Reddick to Woodward Park yesterday (Sunday) morning since it decided to pour all day Saturday. Then Justin and I had a date night and ate at this restaurant where I had some of the best tasting salmon (surprising since it was a steakhouse, but Justin said his steak was excellent). Oh, and their rolls with cinnamon butter spread are the most delicious carbs I've ever ate, we ended up taking six home with us to have later.

I have a super long and busy week including an out-of-town meeting, but it will all be worth it for my three day weekend.

For one of Justin's Christmas gifts, I bought us front row ring-side tickets to the Bellator MMA fight on Friday night at the Savemart Center. One of my friends (Nick Bustamante) will be fighting, as well as other really great fighters. It will be televised on Spike TV so be sure to watch! I hope you have a very lovely and productive week. Let's hope it goes by fast!

Here are a few things to look into if you're interested:

This alarm clock is kind of amazing.
57 small things to do for yourself this year. (#19 sounds like fun!)
How to add greenery to a space.
When New York shuts down from "Snowzilla" this happens, and it's pretty cool.
Wish I could have been there for this. (#snowday)

Happy Mail - January 2016

I have a 12 month commitment with A Beautiful Mess' Happy Mail Subscription which I started in May of last year. In order to get the lowest price of $15 a month you must commit to them for a full year.

Now that this is my 9th order I am still so excited and happy every month this comes. I've always loved writing and collecting cards for different people. What's especially unique about this subscription service is that not a lot of people get it so you are almost guaranteed to never re-gift anyone a card.

I have gotten really creative and started organizing all my cards by category so it is really easy for me to find one for an occasion whenever I need it.

"With cinnamon buns and tasty pineapplesthis kit is full of yummy goodness! The colorful day of the week notepad will certainly help you keep your snail mail on track, and the cute stamp stickers are perfect for all your BFFs far far away. This month's Happy Mail will not disappoint!"

  • 8 Cards
  • 8 Standard Envelopes
  • 1 Postcard
  • 1 8x10 "Yes Please" Art Print
  • 1 Week Notepad
  • 1 4x6 Sheet of Square Cassette Tape Stickers (20 total stickers)
  • 1 "Congrats" Specialty Envelope

Just look at how cute this stationary is.. I cannot get over how well the cards are made and the quality of the paper. It's super cool how each card is designed by a employee of the company and everything is deeply thought of and created in a meaningful way.

For example, the "Yes Please" art print this month is inspired by Amy Poehler's new book.
Which I have not read yet, but definitely have on my wishlist.

My favorite part about this subscription are the art prints that come inside. Each month one 8x10 print is included with a cute design and an awesome phrase. I'm getting ready to frame each one and hang them all up in my office. They are bright, and make for good decor!

If you love stationary and cards, I recommend getting this subscription. Because for only $15 you get 8 cards ($1.87 each) plus other items. Usually cards this price are around $4-$8 which is crazy!

I cannot say enough good things about this company!

Derek Zoolander Lands February Vogue Cover

Yes it's true. Zoolander 2 (releasing February 12th) has been marketing and advertising pretty heavily ever since last March when Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson unexpectedly closed Valentino's runway show at Paris Fashion Week in characters as Derek Zoolander and Hansel. But the team really outdid themselves when Derek Zoolander landed on the cover of February 2016 VOGUE. Damn.

The ever-so talented Annie Leibovitz shot the cover where Stiller poses with co-star Penelope Cruz and then also mingles with other stars in the spread. "Stiller, who also directed Zoolander 2 did not do the interview as the oft-confused male model." Although Karl Lagerfeld declined a cameo, Ben Stiller did convince Marc Jacobs to appear in the movie as himself.

I recently watched the first Zoolander movie just about a couple of years ago, and could not get past their horribly annoying sounding voices -- but I must go see what all the hype is about on this second film. I think it's only necessary.

If Anna Wintour is putting him on the cover, it's kind of a big deal. Check out a few photos from the shoot below, and head over to Vogue to read the full story.

Caffeine with Christine (1/17)

Good Morning!
It's been a very lovely weekend so far.

The weather has been absolutely gorgeous -- blue skies, big fluffy white clouds, and a perfect 60 degrees with sunshine. Literally perfection.

I'm not sure if my work week really overwhelmed me, or if I was just completely exhausted, but when I got home on Friday all I wanted to do is watch TV and get into comfy clothes. I turned on Netflix and started searching for movies under the "drama" category.

I came across a movie called Hardball starring Keanu Reeves that came out in 2001.. I cannot believe I hadn't seen it before. It's about a young man who owes a lot of money to bookies from gambling so he agrees to coach a little league team from the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago as a condition of getting a loan from a friend.

Needless to say, it was one of the best movies I've ever seen and it made me laugh and cry more in one film than any other. If you haven't seen it yet then I suggest you watch it soon.

Yesterday morning I had an early nail appointment to get a fill since I was way over-due. I went with a pretty baby pink, and then white with silver on my ring finger. I got a beautiful blue Pandora ring (which is also my birthstone) for Christmas from my father, and the first thing I thought was that this color would go perfect with it.
I needed to get my car smogged, so we got that done and then walked over to Me-N-Eds to get a pizza and watch the football game while we waited for it to finish. I'm going over to my step-sisters house for breakfast this morning and then hopefully the weather will continue to be beautiful so I can take Reddick to the park.

It's going to be another busy week, bring it on.
I hope you have a wonderful Sunday Funday.
xoxo -Christine

Golden Globes Re-Cap : Everything You Missed

The 73rd annual Golden Globes ceremony took place Sunday (1/10) night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles by kicking off awards season. Ricky Gervais hosted the three plus hour awards show which ended up being a bit of a bore. Anything is possible in the land of live award ceremonies -- impromptu speeches & comedy bits, but this year was long and dull. Where were all the drunk and fun speeches?! Each year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognizes the excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign. If you want to see the full list of winners, check them out on the Golden Globes website.

Here's what went down -- Worst and Best moments of the night :

-Katy Perry bought her entire table In-N-Out Burger (uhm YES!)

-Jonah Hill dressed up as the bear from The Revenant and proceeded to give an acceptance speech in character, while dropping the F-Bomb on live TV.

-The annual teleprompter fail went to presenters Amber Heard and Jaime Alexander who stood in silence until the Blindspot actress asked: "Dude, who's typing this shit?"

-Taraji P. Henson handed out cookies on her way to accept her award for Best Actress (if you don't watch Empire, her character's name is Cookie).

-Lady Gaga covered up all her tattoos for the night.

-Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell called a room of famous people "real buttholes".

-Jim Carrey made his first appearance since the death of his girlfriend (in September).

-Leonardo DiCaprio received a standing ovation from his peers and colleagues upon being presented with the award for Best Actor in a drama picture.

FASHION of the night:

**Disclaimer** - this post was put up late, which is why I didn't do a separate fashion feature... However, the Oscars are coming soon, and that will be my main focus, so look forward to that!
Plus, the golden globes sucked, so lets hope for a better awards show next time...

Lovatics by Demi Lovato for NYC Cosmetics

Demi Lovato has a new makeup collaboration coming out with New York Color. The collection includes three lip and cheek tints, a mascara, two eyebrow liners, and a beautiful universal palette. The eyeshadow palette ($4.99) has a gorgeous collection of 12 nude and smoky shimmery shades. The lip and cheek tints ($3.99) can be built in pigmentation by layering. You can swipe one stroke on your cheek to blend it in really well, or you can layer multiple times on your lips to get a bold effect. The volume and lengthening mascara ($4.99) is suppose to give your lashes 11x more volume and lengthen your lashes by 64%. Lastly, the eyebrow liners ($1.99) enables you to fill in your brow with color, and blend it and shape it by using the brush at the end.

I love when celebrities come out with makeup collections because it shows a lot about their personality and the things they like. Demi Lovato has come a long way these past few years in figuring out who she is and what she wants. Through those years she has built a personal style with all around cool and bad-ass attitude. I feel like these products represent her really well. They sound like amazing quality for such an affordable price tag. My past experiences with NYC have not been the best but I am willing to give this collection a go.

Caffeine with Christine (1/10)

I'm getting a little bit of a late start on putting this post up today. But this morning I got up early to meet with my best friend Maureen for some breakfast and tea at her mothers house. She came to town to visit for Christmas and New Years so it has been nice to visit with her these past few weeks. Her flight back to New York leaves tomorrow, and hopefully I'll be able to visit her soon.

This past week I spent a lot of time with Allison, another close friend of mine who just moved to San Rafael to start her career at Guide Dogs for the Blind. Pretty much all of my closest friends don't live in the same state as me, which is sad at times -- especially when you just need a big hug. The plus side of that is that I have a lot of really nice places to visit my friends around the world.

Today is the night of the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards which is like the daughter of the Oscars, I can't wait to see what all the stars are wearing... It's the 3rd largest event in the fashion industry. Stay tuned for a special Golden Globes fashion post tomorrow!
Have a great rest of your day.
xoxo - Christine
